Do you believe?

Do you believe you’re going to die one day?

I haven’t decided yet whether I would prefer to know in advance or not. I think on balance I’d like to reach my target age of 120 years young, then die in my sleep.

I’ve met clients who intend to be plasticised, others who want to donate their bodies to medical science. I even know one very eccentric person who wishes to donate his brain to someone, in order that he can continue living.

I guess part of the Will process is accepting that one day, you won’t be here. Doesn’t necessarily mean you won’t continue visiting, depending on what you and your family believe. My Jamaican grandma continues to visit us, years after physically passing.

Your Will deals with your financial assets, perhaps the future parenting of your children, and who you want to put in charge. It only takes effect on death, and generally, it’s kept as a secret document until that time. If you believe that one day, you won’t be here and you won’t have a need for financial assets, you may feel ready to go ahead with your Will.

Alternatively, you may have invested some time in finding out what happens to your assets if you don’t have a Will, and you may be at peace with that outcome.

Whatever you believe, please make a conscious choice about what your Will strategy is. If you don’t feel confident looking through the Intestacy Rules – the rules that apply if you die without a valid Will in place – then seek guidance from someone who’s qualified and experienced.

I’m always happy to run through the rules with people, and I accept that no Will is sometimes a good option, depending on your own unique personal circumstances.
